we have backed ourselves into this corner
we have prided ourselves on facelessness in favor of mechanic nostalgia
we have shunned marketing
the sound of people guiding machines
and the machines guiding the people (guiding machines)

what happened         to excitement
      to future newness
drowned in an avalanche of technological advance
beaten into submission
by (pseudo-intellectual elitism)
the future
    caught up with us
while we weren’t looking
while we were too busy building reaktor ensembles to randomize hip-hop samples into new forms
          ( of the same measures and structures )
we handed the keys to the city built
        by robots people
over to cold sequential precision
controlled arrhythmia
we have become desensitized to the therworld-ness
   that was
kicked out of the house
   that was
once the only place
   that was
considered home

we have lost sight of the mission

we have choked on our tails.

  Listening to your music (at this moment)led me to check your web site.
  Appart from been very touched by your music, as if I was hearing something very familiar and close, I share most of the thoughts you express here above; most of the subjects are part of my recurrent reflections. Furthermore, I see that you highly recommend books like “30 days of night”, which I already own, not speaking about the web-links that I’m familiar with.
  My point is: isn’t funny to observe that in our western society there are individuals of alike-sensibilities, although living in different countries, and having different personal, historical and educationnal backgrounds?
  One could assume that 2 people being sensitive to the same music wouldn’t necessarily like the same graphics… But there seems to be links.
  Some people have very similar inner worlds.
  Anyway, thanx for the great music that accompanies my inner visions so wonderfully, and hope to see- and hear- you someday in Paris.

  I know exactly what you mean, about the pretentiousness lingering from a once innovative idea…i used to think the second wave of techno was the standard….after listening to much plastikman and speedy j, i figured that their music epitomized the vision into the future (and keep in mind, I too was led into the sonic evolution via kraftwerk, skinny puppy, nitzer ebb, afx, and neubauten) ...i’m turning 30 in 3 months.
  
  but as long as we have some constants for influence, i.e. jazz and classical, or avant garde
  a la Cage, I’m sure we can stumble upon future innovation, using different methodology.
  
  technology can be a vice or a virtue; convenience is sometimes a crutch for creativity… we used to play with blocks and toys
  as kids. today’s kids surf the web, their imaginations already manifested for them.
  
  but as long as there is creativity, there is creation.

  i see/hear/feel what you are prosing about. it’s quite apparent when you summate the way you do.
  
  so… what can be done about it? perhaps dissect Slayer? yes definitely, i think that’s a reasonable tangent to take.
  
  in the end, technology is merely a tool that when infused with creativity by us mortals can lead to newness within a given set of mediums, whether it is art, writing, music, etc.
  
  i really think your dissension is valid as i feel it too. but i think the real problem is that we are dealing with ‘trends’ and ‘movements’ within the overall scope of ‘music’ including ‘electronic based music’.
  
  how do jazz musicians feel about jazz in 2006? what about rock? what really has changed within music or art or writing?
  
  i’m going to keep thinking on this… and i’m not looking for an answer.
