the electronic musicians guide to…
- going on tour is work yes. but mentally you will have a better time if you treat it as a vacation that you get paid for [sometimes].
- odds are your shows are going to be small privately funded events, treat them as such,... the promoters more than likely paid out of pocket expenses for you to be there.
- knowing the above, do not under any circumstances get fed up with poor sound quality or lack of attendance during your set and close your laptop and turn off your equipment during your performance. this makes you look like a spoiled little girl who didnt get a pony when she asked for it. overall BAD form. if you want to be treated as a “professional” musician you must behave as such.
- if you get a hotel room, great. if you get a room for a night, good. expect to sleep on someones couch / floor. but remember you are a guest in a house far away from your own.
- do not let the promoter pay for dinner… isnt it enough that they flew you out there or gave you a place to stay? at the very least you should offer to pick up the tab,... especially if they have already paid you a “performance fee”. if they insist, graciously let them pay, but insist that you owe them a beer/coffee.
- DO not EVER set up your gear in front of another performer. granted, not many electronic musicians are very active but that doesnt stop the crowd from looking for some signs of life.
- you do not deserve a sound check. a line check, yes. but spending 5 minutes [extra equipment pending] to setup is more than enough. plug-in. powerup. make sure everything is working. get off the stage.
